Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (PEO) ; just as the name suggests holds a unique disposition in the ex-situ animal care. It’s success and fame has travelled not just within the country but throughout the world to an extent where Pinnawala synonymous with the Sri Lankan Elephant.
Currently being a home to 93 elephants the concept was actualized by the late Hon. Minister Kalugalle on the 16th of February 1975. Sri Lanka’s gem industry has a very long and colorful history. Sri Lanka was affectionately known as Ratna-Dweepa which means Gem Island. The name is a reflection of its natural wealth. Marco Polo wrote that the island had the best sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and other gems in the world. Ptolemy, the 2nd century astronomer recorded that beryl and sapphire were the mainstay of Sri Lanka’s gem industry. Records from sailors that visited the island states that they brought back “jewels of Serendib”. Serendib was the ancient name given to the island by middle – eastern and Persian traders that crossed the Indian Ocean to trade gems from Sri Lanka to the East during the 4th and 5th century.
Temple of the Tooth
Sacred Temple of the Tooth;When king Wimaladharmasuriya became King in Kandy,he searched for the Tooth relic and the bowl relic of the Buddha and found that it had been kept at the Delgomuwa Buddhist Temple at Kuruwita,for more than 44 years,hidden in a grinding stone.The king went thre personally and brought the sacred Tooth relic to Kandy in a procession.The first Temple of the tooth Relic was constructed by king Wimaladarmasuriya to house it next to the Royal Place.However this building was later badly damaged during colonial wars.What is seen today is probably a building constructed by King Narendrasinghe.
The Tooth Relic is kept in an inner shrine.In addition to daily rituals,four annual festivals are held at the Temple of the Tooth relic.The most famous of these is the Esala Mangallaya held in Jully, August,lasting for about ten Nights when the Tooth Relic casket is taken in procession on the back of the temple elephant.The Kandy perahara is a magnificent sight with a hundred caparisoned elephants,in procession on the streets of Kandy, accompanied by dancers and drummers, torch bearers and Kandyan chieftains.

09 Arch Bridge
The Nine Arch Bridge is a bridge in Sri Lanka. It is one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country. The construction of the bridge is generally attributed to a local Ceylonese builder, P. K. Appuhami, in consultation with British engineers. The chief designer and project manager of the ‘upcountry railway line of Ceylon’ project was D. J. Wimalasurendra, a distinguished Ceylonese engineer and inventor. The designer of the viaduct was Harold Cuthbert Marwood of Railway Construction Department of Ceylon Government Railway. The 1923 report titled “Construction of a Concrete Railway Viaduct in Ceylon” published by the Engineering Association of Ceylon has details of all the records including the plans and drawings.
Yala National Park
Yala combines a strict nature reserve with a national park. Divided into 5 blocks, the park has a protected area of nearly 130,000 hectares of land consisting of light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks and lagoons. Two blocks are currently opened to the public.
Situated in Sri Lanka’s south-east hugging the panoramic Indian Ocean, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and was designated a national park in 1938. Ironically, the park was initially used as a hunting ground for the elite under British rule. Yala is home to 44 varieties of mammal and 215 bird species. Among its more famous residents are the world’s biggest concentration of leopards, majestic elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted dear, peacocks, and crocodiles. The best time to visit Yala is between February and July when the water levels of the park are quite low, bringing animals into the open.

The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has been declared as world heritage site by the UNESCO. Negombo
Negombo is a commercial hub in Gampaha district and 32 km away from Colombo. Negombo is located with some of the beautiful beaches as well as lagoons. During the Portuguese and Dutch era Negombo has been used as a port. It has to offer beautiful varieties of birds and the Old Dutch Fort which had been built in 1670 and it is turned to a prison today. There is Dutch Canal, old churches and area is dominated with fishing industry. Negombo is called the “Little Rome” as it had Dutch and Portuguese period churches and buildings. A canal which is running through Negombo and Negombo lagoon has extensive mangrove swamps and attracts coastal birds. Ella
Ella is a small town in the Badulla District of Uva Province, Sri Lanka governed by an Urban Council.
